Synthesis of hemoglobin is under genetic control and the presence of abnormal hemoglobins is associated with functional, physical and morphological abnormalities of the red cells.
Hemoglobins are composed of polypeptide chains of globin and iron protoporphyrin heme groups.
Normal hemoglobins have similar structures with a molecular weight of about 67,000 daltons and consist of 2 pairs of globin chains each associated with one molecule of heme.
Normal adult hemoglobins are HbA (98 percentage of total hemoglobin) and small amounts of HbA2 and HbF. Substitution of aminoacids in the polypeptide chains sequence leads to the formation of abnormal hemoglobin variants. At present over 600 structural hemoglobins variants are known: HbS, HbC, HbE, HbD, HbG, HbH, HbI, Hb Lepore, etc. Hemoglobinopathies are a group of diseases caused by the presence of abnormal hemoglobins.
About 60 percentage of abnormal hemoglobins have a sufficiently altered charge distribution to be identified by electrophoresis. The variants most frequently observed are HbS and HbC.
Concomitant presence of HbA and another variant (HbS, HbC, HbE, etc.) is referred to as heterozygous hemoglobinopathy AS, AC and AE respectively. The presence of only one single type of hemoglobin variant is called homozygous hemoglobinopathy, like HbS or HbC.
These abnormal variants are genetically transmissible. Homozygous hemoglobinopathies may cause serious clinical effects. Acid hemoglobin electrophoresis on agarose allows confirmation of the presence of HbS or HbC already detected by Alkaline Hemoglobins electrophoresis.
These unique Acid Fast Control Slides simulate a clinical sputum smear with appropriate background material. Slides have two wells containing a positive and negative smear. Can be used with Kinyoun (Cat. No. 353), Ziehl-Neelsen or SDL’s new product AcriFluor or other fluorescent techniques.

Battery-driven vacuum system operates with a touch of a button.
Features various cylinder sizes and a simple two-handed pumping mechanism.
Although other treatments for
ED (e.g. Viagra®, Injections and
Penile implants) are widely used today,
Vacuum Therapy is gaining increasing
popularity by patients and their physicians
because of the very positive associated benefits.
In fact, Vacuum Therapy should be used as a daily

Researchers at the University of Minnesota are closer to developing a simple urine test to identify smokers who are at high risk of developing lung cancer. Although the test is still years away, the hope is to spot high-risk people earlier when there is still time to prevent or treat the cancer, says Jian-Min Yuan, MD, associate professor of cancer epidemiology at the University.

According to Millennium Research Group’s (MRG’s) European Markets for Urological Devices 2009 report, the prostate cancer device market-comprising brachytherapy seeds, cryotherapy, and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) devices-will be driven by earlier detection of prostate cancer due to an increase in screening over the next five years. Screening allows for early detection of cancer, enabling treatment at a curable stage that can be facilitated through minimally invasive devices, such as those required for brachytherapy, cryotherapy, and HIFU procedures.

UroToday.com - Overactive bladder is a key battleground for the pharmaceutical industry and an area of considerable significance to health delivery systems. Given the substantial effects on quality of life, patients are understandably keen for therapeutic strategies which are effective without the significant side effects of anticholinergic drugs. Finally, clinicians have to deal with refractory urinary urgency, which constitutes a significant burden. Published evidence appears to set a confident and positive outlook; a range of effective anticholinergic drugs is available, whilst botulinum toxin is perceived to mop up those who remain bothered despite conservative and medical management.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Watson Laboratories’ Rapaflo (silodosin) capsules for the treatment of symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Having high affinity for α-receptors concentrated in the prostate, the blocker binds them to smoothen muscles in the tissues. This relaxes them, improving flow of urine and reducing symptoms of BPH such as retrograde ejaculation, dizziness etc.
