Hyperandrogenism, clinically expressed by hirsutism and virilization, is generated by an
excess in androgen production in typical circumstances, such as steroid secreting neoplasms
of the adrenals and the ovaries, adult-onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hyperthecosis
and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
